So I missed us yesterday because my son got sick, but I learned an extremely valuable life lesson that will probably bless your life too.

A couple days ago my son got sick and he wasn’t getting better fast enough so we took him to the doctor.  Long story short he got bronchitis…

Anyone that knows me knows that I take my health seriously and am big on holistic natural medicines and whatnot.  Not to the extreme where I don’t believe in prescription medicine, but i tend to believe that there’s a natural remedy for almost anything and I’d rather go that route if possible.

I say that to give you a little peak into my soul and to say that my son’s chronic respiratory issues that’s been going on since he was 2ish and he’s almost 5 now, bugs me to no end.  I just feel guilty like I’ve let him down when he gets flared up into one of his coughing spells.  Overall I’ve gotten a good handle of things and we keep him a lot more stable now, but every once in awhile, especially when the seasons change it becomes more of a challenge (anyone with seasonal allergies or asthma can definitely relate).

I’m slightly better now with dealing with it, but to be honest his situation use to make me mad not just at the helpless feeling that any parent has when their child is sick, but I would feel animosity towards the world and even God at times like these because…

I would be thinking:

  • Why me, why my son?
  • Why do I have to deal with this?
  • I’m a good person, Christian guy, give my tithes & offerings…
  • I may not read the bible as I should but I try to live according to the will of God

Therefore I guess I’d feel some kinda way about it – A Sense of Entitlement Really.  And this feeling would grow almost like Cancer especially those nights when I was up two or three times giving him treatments barely getting any sleep myself, still having to go to work and try to function.

But here’s what I learned through this recent bronchitis experience that will also bless your life if you breathe it into your world (he’s actually doing a lot better this morning, Thank God!).

First off take a second and ask yourself is there a place where you experience one of the following:

  • Resentment
  • Disappointment
  • Regret
  • Anger
  • Anywhere where you have loss of your enthusiasm in that area

Here is the mental shift we need to make to gain victory:

I recently finished reading this book called “Unfu*k Yourself” and the author sums up this lesson by saying, “Expect Nothing – Accept Everything.”

We have to accept reality for what it is and stop allowing our preconceived expectations or whatever we thought or dreamed the situation was going to be like when we got there, to take us to a place of disappointment and resentment if the reality doesn’t match up… When we got that promotion, when we walked down the isle, when we got our first house, when we graduated college, started that new business, when we reached that place and things weren’t as we expected… If we stay in that place of resentment we literally F*ck ourselves and can’t take appropriate action to move forward.

  • I was suppose to be married with a kid or two by 30…
  • I was suppose to be manager or director by 35…
  • I was suppose to be making X amount of dollars by this time…
  • I’m a good person so I shouldn’t have to be going through this rough time…
  • I’m about to turn 40 and I’m so far from where I thought I’d be…
  • I just got a divorce it was suppose to be like this
  • Ext, ext, ext…

We need to stop allowing our failed expectations get us down and accept reality.  By accepting reality we can better face and overcome whatever the current obstacle is we face, instead of becoming weighted down my depression and despair.

Don’t be held hostage by Failed expectation.  Release yourself – Set yourself free – & Move forward in a new and powerful way accepting reality for what it is.

Can I simply ask you, what unfulfilled expectations are holding you back on your journey?  More importantly, what happens when you imagine letting these expectations go, take a deep breath in as your eyes glance across this screen, and begin now to accept reality for what it is?

Do this and SUPERCHARGE YOUR LIFE!
